You can do this exercise at home or in the gym.
As a beginner, I would say start off with your body weight only, and for balance, you could hold on to a chair with one hand if you need it.
A great exercise to use if you want to add more mass on the lower part of your butt, and it is pretty knee friendly too!
For more advanced trainers, you can also use a barbell whenever you need more weights.
My suggestion is, regardless if you are a beginner or advanced, always start off light with new exercises to make sure proper form and technique, no need to rush into something because it will only lead to injuries in the end.
